Russell and I do not consider ourselves “cooks” but when it comes to winter feasts or summer barbecues, preparing delicious meats for guests is always on the menu. Russell’s famous ham has been the lure of many, especially our Manhattan friends, somehow always reassuring, that for journeying into Brooklyn, the reward of comfort awaits. I on the other hand, have been perfecting how to barbecue a turkey. Always loving activities centered around the fire and looking for a little tastier bird, making the holiday just a little more special.

After all these years, I asked Russell how he cooks his ham. He said there is no special technique, when cooking he is mostly going after smells and a feeling of safety that brings back the past. Pretty simple and delicious.
