Invocation For The Morning Star Quilts & Monoprints

On View Through September 23rd

Installation at Russell Janis Projects, Invocation For The Morning Star, 2023

Lawre Stone’s quilt works bring together found quilts and unfinished quilt tops gathered from ancestors and other unknown makers. Lawre picks up where the former maker left off, adding her own stitches and painted imagery derived from natural phenomena applied by hand to the quilt tops. The images are remembered feelings and internalized observations of the natural world: the petals of a dying flower, a vital organ in distress, a broken chunk of an iceberg. As in a quilting bee, the finishing is done by a seamstress from Lawre’s local community. The final works are intergenerational collaborations between women spanning decades, regions and cultures.

During September, Lawre worked at the Russell Janis studio with collaborative printmaker Janis Stemmermann producing a series of prints based on Lawre’s unique quilted works. The results feature hand-drawn imagery and printed textile, heirloom handmade paper and a layering of materiality and time. A featured event for New York Textile Month, the exhibit will be on view at Russell Janis September 16 – 23. There will be gallery hours with the artist on Saturday September 23, 11 to 6PM or during the week by appointment. Contact us at exhibits@russelljanis.com
